Nihil·Cycle — A Solo Exhibition by Zhang Jing-Ying

|Exhibition Concept

From eternity’s vast emptiness to a fleeting moonlit moment — this exhibition draws from the metaphor of “Indra’s Net” in Huayan Buddhism, where each fragment reflects the whole. In unseen dimensions, all things that seem separate are but different faces of the same essence.

Nihil·Cycle unfolds across layers of translucent fabric suspended in space, forming dimensional portals where AI-generated images search for an exit from the repetition of ordinary life — a next universe waiting to be found.

Fluorescent prints on sheer veils capture ghostly rings of life, frozen glimpses of a thousand cosmic worlds. As viewers walk between vertically arranged curtains, their bodies become moving bridges. A spectral woman, projected and suspended in time, endlessly repeats a ritual: holding out her palms to receive a bloodstained memory card from a war reporter, a paper plane folded from a prescription slip, or a constellation made from fish roe at a twilight market. These are not relics of the past, but living “transmission nodes,” folded moments of time and space — vessels of memory flowing across civilizational cycles.

Reincarnation, here, is not linear but net-like. Through projection, repetition, and vertical transparency, fragments of life form a collective montage — voices layered, realities intertwined. All things arise without fixed selfhood, appearing only through converging causes and conditions, uninterrupted and ever-changing. Truth, like the void, leaves no trace — yet permeates all.

Note: “Nihil” (歸墟) originates from Liezi: Questions of Tang, describing a vast abyss east of

the Bohai Sea into which all rivers and celestial streams pour without increase or decrease. It is both the end that swallows all and the cycle that maintains balance — a poetic embodiment of the Dao: without beginning, without end, ever returning to its source.

|About the Artist

Jing-Ying Zhang, traces the subtle textures of time through her body — measuring the distance between memory and presence with breath, gaze, and movement. Her practice lingers in the interstices of light and shadow, weaving together whispers of diasporic communities and the rhythms of the digital age.

Through immersive narratives and interdisciplinary collaboration, she lays soft passageways across the virtual and the real, inviting viewers to rediscover eternal moments hidden in the cracks of technological life, as the fleeting tremors of morning light. For Zhang, the notion of “border” is not a boundary, but a space of reimagined encounters.
